The Celestine Prophecy a heavenly insight or a New Age fraud?

For almost a year it has been on the best seller list. It is being taught in churches, and has developed a cult-like following in a very short time. Study classes have gathered all over the country to discuss its precepts and implement its "insights." The Celestine Prophecy, written by James Redfield, is the latest New Age oracle which has managed to transcend the boundaries of the crystal gazers and navel meditaters, and reach out to large numbers of mainstream Americans.

The book makes some pretty pretentious claims for itself. From the inside flap of the book cover, we read:

"When you find and understand all 9 of the insights you will have an exciting new image of human life, and a positive vision of how we will save this planet, its creatures, and its beauty... And you will suddenly recognize the quantum leap forward humankind is preparing to make as we approach the new millennium."

On the back of the cover we find in bold print: "You have never read a book like this before... a book that comes along once in a lifetime to change lives forever."

Any book making claims like that has got a lot to live up to. There are, in fact, people who claim that the book has transformed their lives. Cosmetics saleswoman Frances Griggsby uses its teachings in dealing with her customers. Paramedic Chester Davison takes the author's advice about grabbing onto life's coincidences, and Nickie Molaire talks to strangers she would have once shut out.

The Peruvian Manuscript

The story begins with a restless, disgruntled social worker who can't figure out what's wrong in his life. When an old friend calls him out of the blue, she intrigues him with the story of an ancient manuscript that has been found in Peru. This manuscript supposedly contains all the secrets of life, but is being suppressed by the Peruvian government. The social worker is so swept up by the few things he is told, that he books a flight for Peru, to go in search of the document that can tell him the meaning of life.

Once in Peru, he spends the rest of the novel's length in avoiding hostile and misguided Peruvian officials who want to arrest him, and finding bits and pieces of the insights (numbered 1-9) that the manuscript reveals. As the story progresses our hero becomes wiser and wiser, learning step by step the philosophy of life which all mankind (excuse me, humankind) is destined to ultimately grasp.

He learns that all life's coincidences are meant for a purpose, created by a universal energy for the unfolding of man's spiritual evolution. He learns to draw on the universal source of energy, and thus be freed from the need of dominating others to steal their energy. He glimpses his oneness with the universe, and how to increase his energy by meditating on its beauty. By the end of the story he is getting so good at "energy drawing" that he finds himself turning invisible, though only for a short time.

Had this book come out in any other generation than our own, it would have been laughed off the shelves. It is not particularly well written and the new age delusions of grandeur approach the point of utter cornball. What this novel does have going for it is that it fits in beautifully with the many other truths that Shirley McLaine (Out On A Limb), Betty Eadie (Embraced by the Light), and all the other new age gurus have been saying for the last couple of decades.

Author James Redfield was asked, "Is there actually an old manuscript?" He replied, "The answer to that is no. I do think the insights in the book are coming to many, many of us at the same time." With that I certainly agree. There is a spirit of deception that has been loosed in our time which is speaking very similar things to many, many people. The Scriptures warn us: "Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1).

The Nine Insights

This novel centers around nine insights which humans will begin to grasp sequentially, one insight then another, as they move from their present state to a completely spiritual culture on earth. The attaining and comprehending of these insights is the salvation offered by Mr. Redfield. None of them relate to Jesus Christ. Nothing is said about forgiveness of sins or reconciliation to God. Instead we are told that by learning and applying these insights, our lives will be spiritual and fulfilling, and all will be well. Obviously the cross of Jesus has no place here.

The insights are a curious hodgepodge of homespun philosophy, borrowed pop-psychology, and new age rhetoric. The first step is to realize that all of life's coincidences are for a purpose. The second one is to realize that man has left traditional religion, tried materialism, and now must find true spirituality (through the insights, of course). The third insight is that there is an invisible energy which people must learn to perceive, and that the universe is energy that responds to our expectations. The fourth reveals that the world is a vast competition for energy, and the fifth says that the "universe" can provide all the energy we need if only we can open up to it. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

The fact that people are actually taking this seriously speaks volumes about the theological ignorance of Americans. Were it not for the fact that this book is a best-seller, I would be tempted to write it off as a silly piece of harmless fluff. But to thousands this book is not silly; it is an explanation of life's mysteries. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross writes on the front cover: "A fabulous book about experiencing life — I couldn't put it down."

Jesus vs. the Nine Insights

Let us consider some of the areas where we find the worldview that Christ believed and taught at odds with The Celestine Prophecy's insights. Mr. Redfield seems very defensive about his book not contradicting any religion, but rather building on their truths and revealing their true nature. When he was asked what was the book's central theme, he responded, "Each of us can come to a place where we make a true connection with the divine no matter what religion we are. And when we do so, we can begin to see that the world will open up to us to complete a mission or a calling." When the main character of the book had a mystical experience of being one with the universe, he was told, "This is the experience the mystics of every religion have always described."

This eclectic, all religions are fine, approach sounds very open minded and noble, but runs directly contrary to the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. He declares emphatically, "If you believe not that I am He, you will die in your sins." In John 10 He proclaims, "I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them." And in a great display of religious intolerance He boldly declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, except through Me" (John 14:6).

Thus we come to a dilemma. From whom shall we obtain our theology? From James Redfield or Jesus Christ? Let us consider their qualifications. Mr. Redfield has written one popular book. Jesus Christ has come from heaven, died for the sins of the world, risen from the dead, and sits at the right hand of the Father, having received all authority in heaven and on earth.

Energy, Energy Everywhere

If there is one word that gets run into the ground in the story, it is energy. According to the insights, life is all about energy. The manuscript reveals that "eventually humans would see the universe as comprised of one dynamic energy, an energy that can sustain us and respond to our expectations. Yet we would also see that we have been disconnected from the larger source of this energy, that we have cut ourselves off and so have felt weak and insecure and lacking." Although God is mentioned a few times in the book, the real god of this book is energy.

The Bible, likewise speaks about energy. The Greek word energeia (from which we derive our word energy) is often used to describe the powerful working of the Holy Spirit in the believer. Paul uses this term in Colossians: "To this end I also labor, striving according to His working [energeia] which works in me mightily."

So as a Christian I am not opposed to the idea of spiritual energy. However the Scriptures make plain that God's energy is only available through Jesus Christ and the filling of the Holy Spirit. This is not some universal power available to people of all religions. Jesus said, "He that believes on Me, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:38). In Acts He promised, "You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses of Me" (Acts 1:8). No Muslims, Hare Krishnas, atheists, or new agers need apply!

What this tale fails to take into account is that there is an evil energy that is at work in the world. This is the very energy that will one day empower the Antichrist. Paul writes, "The coming of the lawless one is according to the working [energeia] of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders" (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Those who would desire to open themselves up to universal energy, without bothering to make Jesus Christ the Lord of their lives, may find that the energy they receive comes from a most malicious source.

Where is the Cross?

The most condemning aspect of this book has got to be what it does with Jesus. For the better part of the book Jesus is not mentioned. Salvation of mankind is to be through the "insights." But near the end we finally learn what we are to think about Jesus. One of the "enlightened" priests spells it out:

"Isn't the story of the scriptures a story of people learning to receive God's energy and will within ... And isn't that receptivity to God's energy within what culminated in the life of a carpenter's son, to the extent that we say God, himself, descended to earth? ... Didn't Jesus, himself, say that what he did, we could do also, and more? We've never really taken that idea seriously, not until now. We're only now grasping what Jesus was talking about, where he was leading us. The Manuscript clarifies what he meant! How to do it!"

So now Mr. Redfield presumes to clarify for us the purpose for which Jesus came. He came to show us all how to tap into the universal energy. Yet where is the cross in all of this? The Bible tells us that man is a sinner (Romans 3: 9,10), he has an evil, wicked nature (Romans 7:20), and must be born again in order to have a hope of heaven (John 3:3). Christ died in our place for our sins on the cross (Galatians 1:4), shed His blood for the remission of our sins (Ephesians 1:7), and has made it possible for us to be reconciled to God (Ephesians 2:13).

What a vast difference there is between The Celestine Prophecy's "Life is energy" nonsense, and the revelation of God's plan of salvation for man, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures! The one thing Mr. Redfield dares not touch is the cross. No mention whatever is made of the cross of Jesus in his book. No doubt he realizes that the message of the cross is somehow incongruous with his religion of universal energy.

The Scriptures plainly teach that man's great need is not some unnamed universal energy, but rather to have his sins forgiven and to enter into a restored relationship with His loving Creator. This is what Christ has made possible for us when He died on the cross and three days later rose from the dead. Those who cling to the vain philosophies of the imaginations of men, forfeit the grace and mercy that is ours through the free gift of the righteousness of Christ.

If you have no assurance in your heart that you have ever been born again, why don't you give your heart to Jesus today? Receive Him as your Lord and Savior, and put away foolish speculations that can do nothing for your soul. Invite Christ into your heart and life, and let your confidence rest upon the sure foundation of the grace of God. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12).

When I was six years old, my mother had passed away. Everybody was in shock because her passing had happened so suddenly that nobody was expecting it. After her passing, I clung more to her mother then I did to my father's mom. I felt like I belonged more with her than anybody else. Somebody who understood me and who could understand what I was going through when I was growing up. My grandmother lives in Florida, and since I live in Virginia, it's really hard for me to see her. But that doesn't stop the bond that we share.

Well, one night when I was about 15, I was talking to my grandmother on the phone the night before Mother's Day and she muttered "I wonder what she will do tomorrow" and puzzled by the mental note that she had spoken out loud, I questioned it. She explained to me that every year since my mother has passed, she always does something to Grandmother to show that she is still with her. Of course I didn't believe her until she told me the story of what had happened 2 years previously. My Grandmother was asleep in bed and it was about 3 in the morning when the phone started to ring. She answered it, but nobody spoke when she said hello. It was just silent. So the next morning when she got up, she checked the caller id and the number that had called her was from her cell phone in her purse that had been turned off the night before. So she had explained to me that she was most certain that it was my mother who was sending her a message of love. The next year, my grandmother decided that she would clean her room up a little, and while she dusted a picture of her and I, she saw another picture sticking out from the back of it. So she opened it up to find a picture of my mother from when she was in the army and a picture of my mother, father and I. She claimed that she had never seen those pictures in her life, and that she is the one that had put the main picture in the frame and she had no idea how the rest of those pictures got there.

Because of those stories that my grandmother has told me, I can honestly say that I believe in angels and always will. After my mother passed, my grandmother needed someone and I can say that I think that my mother had understood that and now shows that she is there for her and always watching over her.

On November 16, 1993, in a middle class home in Clear Lake, Texas, Deborah Powell's house was broken into by burglars while her youngest daughter Sarah was there alone from school. Deborah came home and found her daughter hog-tied, her hands tied to her feet and having amnesia. Although she couldn't remember what happened to her, she was deeply depressed and because of her amnesia, she had to relearn everything all over again.

 

One month after the crime, Sarah fell down and had what appeared to be a seizure. Sarah was diagnosed with having severe post-traumatic stress disorder and it was during her seizures that the terrifying details of the crime would enter her memory. When the burglars entered the home, Sarah became hysterical. One of the burglars attempted to smother her with a pillow. Fighting for her life, she noticed a tattoo on the burglar who was trying to kill her. When he realized she had seen his tattoo, he became enraged and struck her in the head. It was at this point that she died and had a near-death experience.

"After I left my body, I found myself waking up underneath a tree in a place that seemed to be the best place that anyone could possibly be. It's the place I call heaven. It is definitely the place where I want to spend eternity. As I began to look around, I saw a figure approaching me and it turned out to be a good friend of mine. He had passed away four days before. Brian walked up to me and simply explained to me what was happening to me. He said I was going to be okay and that I was going to be spared for a certain reason. I had something to do. He said he had someone to introduce to me. Shortly after, someone else walked up. It was a tall man in a white suit and white top hat who spoke in a British accent.

 

"He said, ‘I am going to be with you for a long time. I've known you all your life and I've been your guardian angel all of your life.'

 

"He said he didn't want me to be afraid because of what was happening to me. I wasn't dying. I would have to go back. Then he told me that I was brought there to rest to gain the courage and energy to go on and finish what I'm supposed to finish.

 

"It seemed like everything then started to kind of fade out and then I was back in my room before I knew it. When I woke up again, my dog was licking me in the face and I didn't know where I was or who I was or how I got there or why I was tied up."

 

Something occurred while in the presence of her psychologist who was making regular visits to Sarah's home to help her regain her memory.

 

"My psychologist was trying to calm me down because no one could. I was to the point where I wasn't even trying to listen to anybody. I was just rocking back and forth and trying to sing to myself. While I was talking to her, a light appeared. It appeared as a circular shape and then came down as a long oval. That was George.

 

"Immediately, I just stopped crying and Sharon (her psychologist) just seemed to be amazed. She said, "How come you calmed down so quickly?" And I said, "He says I am going to be ok and he is going to take care of me now."

 

The guardian angel Sarah met during her near-death experience, who became affectionately known as George, helped in Sarah's emotional healing and reached out to touch the lives of Sarah's family and friends.

"I told my mother to sit down. I said I have an angel and he is going to be with me awhile to help us get through this. He says he has been with me a long time since I was a baby. He says that when I was a little kid, I used to laugh at him because he had this big hat that he had to push out of his eyes."

 

When Sarah's mother heard this she started to cry. There was time when Sarah was two or three years old when Sarah would laugh a lot in her room. Her mother would peek in the room and ask what Sarah was laughing at. Sarah would say, "the man with the big hat comes and makes me laugh all the time." Sarah's mother even keeps drawings that Sarah created of this "man" who made her laugh as a child.

At this point in her healing, Sarah would frequently receive visitations from George. Sarah would actually be able to see and converse with George even though family members could not see or hear him. Sarah was even able to have George heal her friend who had suffered constantly with various illnesses throughout her life. When Sarah was fully recovered, George prepared her for his departure. George had a message he wanted to leave with Sarah to share with others and he wanted her to write it down. The following is the message:

"You must see that everyone within your reach hears about what happened to you. All of it. You must open their eyes and give them hope. Dedicate your soul to healing people simply by talking and letting everyone know how the world is changing. You'll begin to get responses. Ideas will come. Solutions to problems will appear and the people will send you letters supporting you. Some people will be negative, but these are the people who will be harder to reach. Don't let them discourage you. You have proven to be strong and your family as well. I know you can get through this and when you do, you'll come out even stronger than before. Through your mouth, they will hear, because you are a child – a child of God and a child who can bring hope to God's people. After receiving this message, George went away and could not be seen by Sarah again. Sarah has this to say about guardian angels:

What Happens During a Near-Death Experience?

 

 

A near-death experience is an event that happens when a dying person leaves his or her body and travels through time and space, gaining powerful new spiritual insights in the process and then returning to his or her physical body and recovering. A near-death experience may occur either when a person is approaching death (suffering from a life-threatening condition that is worsening) or already clinically dead (after their heartbeats and breathing have stopped). Most seem to occur after people die clinically, but then are later revived through CPR.

Are near-death experiences miraculous? They are to people who have gone through them, and others who believe that they provide glimpses of the afterlife.

What Happens During a Near-Death Experience?

People who have had near-death experiences often report experiencing features that form a common pattern among the millions of people throughout history who have reported near-death experiences. Leaving the Body

Encountering a Light of Love

People report meeting a powerful spiritual being who appears in the form of a brilliant white light. Although the light that the being generates is brighter than any that people have seen on Earth, it doesn't hurt them to look at the light, and they don't feel uncomfortable in its presence. To the contrary, people say that the being of light radiates love, which leads them to feel at peace about the journey they're going through. People sometimes think of the being of light as a manifestation of God, and sometimes as an angel. They often report feeling intense emotions while enveloped in the light. One person quoted in the book Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences by Jeffrey Long, MD reflects: "A beautiful light drew me to itself; the light still touches me with awe, and tears come immediately."

Meeting Angels and Deceased People

Angels and people who have died but knew the person having the near-death experience in some way while alive (such as family members or friends) often greet that person shortly after the brilliant light appears. They all recognize each other, even without seeing each other physically. Tennis player Laurelynn Martin recounts in her book Searching for Home: A Personal Journey of Transformation and Healing After a Near-Death Experience: "I became aware of many spirits. They surrounded, embraced and supported my journey with their gentleness, knowledge and guidance. I felt one of them approach from my right upper side. This familiar presence came forward and my feelings changed to sheer joy when I discovered my 30-year-old brother-in-law, the one who had died seven months earlier from cancer. My essence moved to meet his essence. I couldn't see with my eyes or hear with my ears, yet I instinctively knew that it was "Wills.'" Sometimes, people meet a spirit who knows about them, but whom they don't know because the person passed away before they were born.

Undergoing a Life Review

People usually see a panoramic movie of their lives replayed for them, featuring every experience they had on Earth simultaneously, yet in a form that they can understand well. During this life review, people can recognize how their choices affected themselves and other people. A person quoted in Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences states: "Every second from birth until death you will see and feel, and [you will] experience your emotions and others that you hurt, and feel their pain and emotions. What this is for is so you can see what kind of person you were and how you treated others from another vantage point, and you will be harder on yourself than anyone to judge you."

Feeling Intense Emotions

When people perceive that they're in the process of entering heaven, they report feeling blissful, and they don't want to leave even if they have unfinished work to do on Earth. However, the people who find themselves approaching hell during their near-death experiences report feeling terrified and urgently want to return to Earth to change their lives.

Sensing Sights, Sounds, Smells, Textures, and Tastes Vividly

Despite the fact that their physical bodies are unconscious, people who have near-death experiences report being able to see, hear, smell, feel, and taste more vividly than they ever could on Earth. After returning, they often describe colors or music that are unlike anything they've encountered on Earth.

Gaining New Spiritual Insights

During near-death experiences, people often learn information that helps them understand what had previously been mysterious to them. One person said in Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences that "all the secrets of the universe, all knowledge of all time, everything" became understandable during the near-death experience.

Learning That It’s Not Time to Die Permanently

Somehow, the people who go through near-death experiences figure out that it's not their time to die permanently. Either a spiritual being informs them that they have unfinished work they need to complete on Earth, or they come to a boundary in their travels and must decide whether to stay in the afterlife or return to life on Earth.

Returning to the Physical Body

Near-death experiences end when people's souls re-enter their physical bodies. Then they're resuscitated, and recover from whatever illness or injury had caused them to approach death or clinically die.

Living Transformed Lives

After a near-death experience, many people decide to live differently than they did prior to going through that experience. People who have returned from near-death experiences to their earthly lives are usually more kind, less materialistic, and more generous people than they were before, according to the groundbreaking near-death experience book Life After Life by Raymond A. Limitations of modern medical science and need for spiritual healing

 

1. Introduction

Since time immemorial, the study of disease and its remedies has captivated humankind. Today, modern medicine i.e., Allopathy, has gained prominence and widespread acceptance as the preferred method of curing disease. The advances in modern medicine have made clearer the physical and psychological causes behind various diseases. However, it is also true that the reasons behind many diseases are still not completely understood by modern medical science.

2. Limitations of modern medical science

It is important to understand the causes behind any disease for obvious reasons, like curing the disease; it is equally important to understand why one person out of two gets ill, where both of them had an equal chance of catching the disease. Modern medical science explains a lot about the first point, but is at odds to say much about the second point. Many a time in Allopathy, treating a disease means treating the symptoms or signs of the disease. Therefore, for many of the diseases, even after the symptoms have been suppressed, one has to continue treatment throughout one’s life to keep them suppressed, without actually curing the disease itself. Then as there is no permanent cure, one has to endure the physical and psychological distress associated with the disease along with the side effects of the treatment.

3. Importance of spiritual healing remedies for better health

Āyurvēda the traditional Indian health system, recognises that the cause of disease can be at three levels, i.e., physical, psychological and spiritual. At SSRF, through spiritual research, we have identified that the predominant root cause of illnesses is spiritual in nature. In fact up to 80% of the root cause of why a person gets a certain disease is spiritual in nature. These spiritual reasons can include an individual’s destiny or karma, due to departed ancestors or negative energies (ghosts, demons, devils etc.). These spiritual reasons are specific to an individual. This is precisely the reason why one person out of two gets ill, where both of them had an equal chance of catching the disease.

Spiritual practice and spiritual healing measures are important tools to overcome illnesses where the root cause, most of the time, is spiritual in nature. As it is difficult to understand or realise the spiritual reason responsible for the disease of a person, a patient should continue with the usual prescribed medical treatment and along with it employ spiritual remedies. When an individual undertakes spiritual practice, one’s spiritual level rises and there is an intrinsic change in his spiritual constitution. It also has an effect on the mind and body. The benefit of this is an increase in protection from disease and other distresses arising out of it. For example, even though one can contract a disease, the physical and psychological distress suffered due to the illness is less when compared to a person not doing spiritual practice. Spiritual practice and spiritual healing measures not only helps to overcome illnesses but also helps to make a person’s mind spiritually purer and more selfless.

4. Importance of spiritual healing methods in the coming times

The world is currently in a stage of turmoil. Many Saints have predicted the possibility of a Third World War and unprecedented natural disasters in the next few years. As a result of this war there will be a scarcity of many basic commodities. Factories will close down and medicines will become unavailable. During that time, one will have to rely on spiritual healing measures and available alternative therapies to cure diseases. From this vantage point, learning and practising spiritual healing measures from now itself is important.

After Show Angels

 

 

This incident took place in May or June of 2002, in Denver, Colorado.

In Denver, I met with a group of people from work to go see a rock concert. There was a girl that was with us who was extremely hateful toward me for no reason. Several times during the concert, she would run and jump into me, trying to hurt me.

After this subsided, I regained my composure and realized how drained and exhausted I was from the whole experience. I had bought $45 worth of merchandise, including a concert T-shirt for $25. Later, I discovered that the T-shirt was missing -- someone had stolen it.

I also noticed that the group I was with had left me all alone and so I left the concert also. I went back to the booth to exchange the other $20 of merchandise to buy another shirt. I was $5 short but somehow I managed to find some generous people who gave me the mo0ney to make up for it. I was able to buy another shirt and I left.

It took me at least an hour to find my car in the huge parking lot. I finally got into my car and made my way home. On the way, about a mile up, I decided to to stop at McDonald's and eat. I went through the drive-thru and parked in a dark spot to eat when suddenly a man and a woman came toward my car.

The man stepped up to my window and asked me if I could give them a ride to their destination and without hesitating, I agreed to help them. I was almost starving hungry and asked the man if he would be willing to wait until I finished eating and he was very polite and said it was it was fine.

As I was eating, I kept glancing at this peculiar couple and the man's gaze and facial expression was very pleasant, almost as if he was smiling. He had a sort of purity about him. His eyes almost glowed and they were glossy. The woman, however, was extremely reserved, didn't say a word nor did she make any eye contact with me. After I finished my meal, I started driving in the direction that the couple needed to go. About a quarter of a mile down a busy street, the man asked me to drop them off on the side of the street.

I pulled over and the female got out first but the man pulled out a twenty-dollar bill and said, "Here, let me at least give you this!" I didn't expect anything from him and was extremely grateful! I thanked him and then he and the lady turned around and started running and crossed the street.

As I drove down the busy street in their direction to turn around, I noticed that they were nowhere in sight. It seemed as if they vanished! At the time of this incident, I didn't understand why the man would give me so much money for driving him and the lady such a short distance! I also realized that, strangely, that twenty-dollar bill made up for the money I had lost at the concert! It took me at least a year to finally figure out that this mysterious couple that came to my car that night, were, without a doubt, angels that came to my aid!
